If you are moving your Steam installation to a new hard drive and want to keep game saves/profiles for third party games that are not saved on Steam Cloud most of these can be found in your Documents folder: ~ Documents. To find your games from extrenal hard drive on new computer go to steam client, upper left corner click steam, then settings There you have 'downloads' tab, and click on 'steam library folders' and just add the external hard drive steam directory from it and confirm.

When you come to install Steam, you should get a choice of where to install it, under custom installation if I remember correctly. If not, steam isn't massive anyway.
When you come to install games, you can choose a Steam library to install to. The default is the
%steamapps
folder within the steam installation directory. You can choose to use a different folder with each game:Note: I already had a steam library on my HDD but it was straight forward to create a new one.

All you have to do is junction the Steamapps folder to a folder on an external drive. On 64 bit windows that's
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamapps
See this super user answer for how to make a junction, there are also programs/shell extentions that make it easier, but for one junction, this is pretty easy.
Since you're on windows 7, this code should work:
Install virtual midi router windows 7. Note that if you do this Steam will act rather weirdly if you run it while the external drive plugged in; it will attempt to download updates for games that aren't there and will force re-checks of your games on occasion since they went 'missing'. It's nothing major, but just try to avoid running Steam while the drive isn't plugged in.
I do this both on my Desktop (Steam installed on SSD, games are on an HDD) and a laptop where they're on an external drive. It works quite well.

I have successfully transferred 'Killing Floor' from my brother's laptop to my own via external hard drive. The problem, now that I have all the files, is that I don't know how to launch the game through Steam. All I did was copy files from his Laptop to the hard drive, then from the hard drive to my laptop, then I put the files in the 'Steamapps' folder under 'Steam' in my laptops hard drive. So the question is, how do I start up the game through Steam?

Steam supports backup-files. Here is a part from the Steam FAQ/How-To's:
Creating Backup Files
- Right-click the game in the Library section
- Select Backup game files.
- Check the boxes for any other games to backup at this time
- Click Next >
- Browse to the folder where you wish to create the backup files (the files will be stored in c:program filesvalvesteamBackups by default) and click Next >
- Select the Backup file name and set the File size for the media you plan to use.
- Click Next > to begin the backup process.
- Once complete, choose Open backup folder to move or burn copies of the backup files
Restoring from Backup Files
- Install Steam and log in to the correct Steam account (see Installing Steam for further instructions)
- If the backup files were copied to a CD or DVD, the process should run automatically when the disc is inserted. If not, run steambackup.exe from the disc
- If steambackup.exe is missing, please download this copy of steambackup.exe and place it in the correct backup folder.
- Continue through the Steam windows to install the necessary games.
Alternative to the Backup Feature for Third-party Games
- Go to your steamapps folder (by default, this folder is located at C:Program FilesSteamsteamapps or on 64-bit systems, C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamapps)
- Locate any .ncf files for the game.
- Locate this game's folder in the common folder.
- Copy all of the .ncf files and the game folder to a disc or available hard drive for reinstallation
- For future installations, copy these files and folders to your new Steam installation.
- Make sure to place it back in the proper folder (steamapps for .ncf files and common for game folders). In addition you may also rename/delete your ClientRegistry.blob to force Steam to rescan your gamedirectory.
- Re-start Steam and you may see a small download to confirm the newly identified install.

All you should need to do is simply start Steam, then sign into a Steam account that owns the game. Torrent download. As long as it's in the Steamapps folder, Steam should see it and let you play.

How To Download Steam Games Onto An External Hard Drive
Alternatively, if it doesn't show up on your steam list (happens to me on a friends computer) then find the game and download it and before it tries to download it fresh, it will check for existing files and boom - it'll find what you copied.

You'll need to own the game on your account as well, but after you've transferred the Killing Floor folder into the steamapps on your computer, just tell steam to download Killing Floor and it will verify the files. Blur vitality crack update 2 men.

Go into steams, do everything you would do to normally download the game. But it will recognize that you already have most of the files, and then download like 1MB of files you missed then you're done.
